THE TRAGEDY OF ROMEO & JULIET

Welcome to Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.  This is your syllabus for the whole unit.  Don’t lose this.  This is subject to change at the teacher’s discretion. We will read some scenes in class and you will read some at home.  We will discuss each scene in class.  Be aware that you will be quizzed on scenes you read as homework.  In addition, you will add vocabulary words to your journal.  There is a list of 28 words following this syllabus, and you will add 12 of your own words for a total of 40.

Hand out Themes sheet. Share answers in small groups, whole class discussion. Begin reading R&J. Discuss the Prologue.

Tue 11/11        MASS - In class – Assign parts, and start Act I, Scene 1. Pp. 732-744. Read and discuss. Work on SG.

Wed 11/12        Assign parts.  Read Act I, Scene 2 & 3 pp. 744-751.  Discuss.  Finish from where we end as homework.  Work on SG.

Thu 11/13        Assign parts.  Read Scenes 4 & 5 in class.  pp 752-761.  Discuss. Answer questions on p. 762.  Finish SG’s,  Study for Act I quiz.

Fri 11/14        Quiz over Act I. Collect the Act I study guides. Homework:  Work on vocabulary.

Mon 11/17        Hand out Act II SG’s. Assign parts.  Begin Act II, Scene 1 & 2.  pp. 764-773.

Tue 11/18        Assign parts.  Read Scenes 3 – 4, pp. 774-782.  Work on SG and Vocab.

Wed 11/19        Discuss Assign parts.  Read Scenes 5 and 6 in class. pp. 782-786. Homework:  Finish SG.  Study for Act II Quiz.

Thu 11/20        End of Quarter 1.  Act II Quiz. SG Due!  Vocab

Fri 11/21        Assign parts. Hand out Act III SG’s.  Read Act III, Scenes 1-3 in class. pp. 790-805. Discuss.  Homework:  Work on SG.

Mon 11/24        Assign parts. Read scenes 4 & 5. pp. 805-815.  Review by answering questions on page 816.  Homework:  Finish SG’s.  Vocab.

Tue 11/25        Quiz over Act III.  Collect SG’s.  Hand out Act IV SG’s.  Assign parts.  Read Act IV, scenes 1 – 3 in class.  pp. 818-826.  Discuss.  If needed, finish as homework.  Homework: Work on SG’s.

Wed 11/26        Early dismiss for Thanksgiving!         

Thur 11/27        No School.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Fri 11/28        No School.

Mon 12/1        Act IV, scenes 4-5.  Finish Study Guide

Tue 12/2        Quiz over Act IV.  Collect SG’s. Hand out Act V SG’s.  Begin Act V.  Assign parts.  Read Scene 1 and 2 in class.  pp. 838 - 839.  Discuss.  Begin scene 3.  Homework:  Work on SG’s

Wed 12/3        Finish Scene 3 in class.  pp. 839-851.  Act V Quiz.  Discuss.  Read “Connections” on page 854.  Homework:  Finish SG’s. Be working of vocabulary

Thu 12/4        Review entire play for Final Test.  Discuss questions at the end of each act.  pp. 762, 788, 816, 834, and 855.
