National Honor Society

"The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service." Monthly Member Meetings
Meetings are held the third Tuesday of the month in the Private Dining room during 2nd lunch.  All members are expected to attend meetings.  To learn more about the governance of National Honor Society, please view the NHS Constitution.

Initial Eligibility
Every chapter must review applicants based upon the requirements of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The minimum GPA set by the National Honor Society organization is 3.0; however, school chapters are given freedom to increase the GPA. The CCHS Chapter's GPA requirement is a 3.3. Please view our NHS Flyer for further details about leadership, service, and character.

Selection Procedure
The chapter adviser reviews the GPAs of juniors and seniors. Any student not already a member of NHS who has a 3.3 GPA or higher is invited to submit a Candidate Information form to show an interest in membership.  These forms are given out at a candidate meeting in the fall semester. Students typically have 2-3 weeks to work on their applications.

NHS members are selected based on the four criteria of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The Faculty Council reviews the Candidate Info forms, faculty/staff feedback regarding student character, and disciplinary records and votes to select members. Candidates are selected by a majority vote. The Faculty Council is made up of five faculty and staff at CCHS, but does not include the principal or the chapter adviser.

Once decisions are made regarding student selection, students will receive a notification letter. Selected students will be invited to participate in a celebratory Induction Ceremony in late fall/early winter.  The 2018 NHS Induction Ceremony will be on Sunday, December 2 at 3 p.m. at CCHS.

Further description of the selection process and handout is available here.
